We now have another qualified paralegal who adds experience and quality to our existing team. The delivery of the apprenticeship was first class, notwithstanding the restrictions currently in place.
Scotia Law Training has been an invaluable resource and support to our paralegal apprentices over the years. The paralegal training they receive is beneficial both to the apprentice and the firm, providing an excellent stepping stone on which to progress.
I started my apprenticeship with Scotialaw with no knowledge of legal systems and finished my apprenticeship with a solid understanding of legal systems. The apprenticeship enhanced my work performance as I became much more confident when advising clients because I could use my knowledge from my apprenticeship.
The study materials provided were amazing. They are so detailed and something I will refer back to if ever needed. The support available was so helpful – I never felt worried to ask a question and always got help quickly when required.
The observations were carried out in an effective way and I felt comfortable each time.
This was the first time we had used the modern apprenticeship route to train a paralegal. The expectation was that this would provide more structure and support to the training than distance learning opportunities. The apprenticeship met and exceeded our expectations in that the apprentice was supported far more than we anticipated and this was a huge benefit to both the apprentice and firm. At the outset we had not appreciated the core skills elements which would be developed too and this also exceeded expectations and provided a good base of skills from which the paralegal qualification then follows.
There has been a notable difference our apprentice’s confidence during the training. This is something she has struggled with, although she has the skills to do the work. Therefore, it is a benefit to the firm to see our apprentice grow in confidence throughout.
The benefits included a base line of core skills being developed. The principal benefit was likely the support Scotia was able to provide which meant the firm was sharing the training obligations and any burden was lifted. Scotia were easy to work with and our apprentice and the firm benefited greatly from how approachable they were.
It was great that some of the observations were able to be done virtually – in particular given the lockdown restrictions which no one could have anticipated at the outset. Given our rural location, it was good to have the flexibility afforded by technology. We are often not able to access training due to the geography, but this was not the case with this.
Both apprentices are now capable of attending at consultations with Counsel and clients, obtaining precognitions from potential witnesses in cases as well as preparing and investigating lines of defence as instructed by clients. Both candidates are extremely competent in all aspects of their job requirements and this allows the firm to deliver a better standard of service to our clients and third party agencies. The overall delivery of the paralegal training is excellent and had minimal impact on the daily running of our offices. The support provided to the apprentices throughout the MA was extremely satisfactory.
